UN Atomic Agency Estimates “Significant Damage” in Fordow

by Marcelo Moreira

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA), Rafael Grossi, said on Monday (23) that US attacks against the Uranium Uranium underground plant in south of Tehran possibly caused “very significant damage.”

“Given the type of explosives used and the extreme sensitivity of centrifuges to vibrations, the damage is expected to have been very significant,” AIEA chief said at the beginning of an emergency meeting of the UN agency’s council of governors in Vienna.

Grossi stressed that “there are visible craters” in Fordow, the main uranium enrichment plant of Iran, which he described as “consistent with US statements” on the subject, although he recognized that “no one, including the AIEA, is able to completely assess underground damage to Fordow.”

The Head of AIEA has asked for an interruption of assaults so that agency inspectors will be able to access nuclear facilities and confirm the consequences of the attacks. He confirmed that there is no increase in radiation in any of the places affected by the US to date.

Regarding Isfahan’s nuclear installation, the director general explained that the US attacked several buildings with cruise missiles, including “some related to the uranium conversion process.”

“In addition, at this location, the entrances of tunnels used for storing enriched material seem to have been impacted,” added Grossi.

The large uranium enrichment plant in Natanz, downtown Iran, was also attacked by the US with bunker destructive bombs.
