Trump should be “more head of state and less internet,” says Lula

by Marcelo Moreira

President Lula said on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump should be “less internet and more head of state.” The statement was made during a meeting of the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) at the Ministry of Mines and Energy in Brasilia. At the time, Lula also criticized the conduct of the US leader’s economic and external policy.

During his speech, Lula said that, in a troubled international scenario, the president of a nation as the United States should act more responsibly, reflecting before manifesting publicly. For the petista, Trump should adopt a more multilateralism, defense of free trade and the promotion of peace. “I should think about what to say, to be less internet and be more head of state,” he said.

Without citing a name directly, Lula compared Trump’s behavior to that of a former Brazilian president, stating that Brazil has had a ruler with a similar profile. According to him, in cases like these, “what matters least is the truth” and the real interests of the country end up being set aside in favor of ideological or personal disputes. Lula also stated that one should not meet the extremes, but seek “the middle path.”

The president also commented on the current conflict between Israel and Iran, reiterating his defense by peaceful solutions. “I want to spend away from war. I don’t want to trouble in my life,” he said. The Brazilian government, in turn, condemned the attacks of Israel and the United States against Iran and has reinforced the need for a negotiated ceasefire. During the same event, Lula also defended the oil exploration on the so -called equatorial margin, as a way to ensure the country’s energy safety.
