Trump says he believes in ceasefire in Gaza “next week”

by Marcelo Moreira

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday at an event at the White House – according to information from the EFE news agency – who believes it is possible to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip next week.

“I just talked to some of the people involved. The situation in Gaza is terrible. We believe that next week we will get a ceasefire,” said the White House chief during a ceremony that celebrated the peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, signed in Washington.

Trump highlighted the United States’s efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region. “We are working in Gaza and trying to solve the situation. We are providing a lot of money and a lot of foods for this region because we need to do it,” he said.

Although he has pointed out that the US, “in theory,” are not directly involved, Trump has recognized the active role that the country has taken on the crisis. “In practice we are involved, because people are dying,” he said.

The president also criticized the inertia of other nations in the face of tragedy. “Look at the crowds who have no food or anything. We are the ones we have arrived,” he said, charging more solidarity from the international community, which he says “is not helping.”

The statement of the US president occurred on the same day as the newspaper Haaretz He published that Israeli soldiers would be allowed to fire against disarmed civilians in the Gaza Strip near humanitarian aid distribution points. According to EFE agency, in response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement rejecting “energetically” the allegations.
