United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that after he has been able to reach “peace” in the Middle East, China may again buy Iranian oil a month after threatening sanctions with those who marketed gross oil from Tehran.
“China can buy Iranian oil again. Hopefully they also buy a lot from the United States. It was a great honor for me to make it happen,” Trump wrote on his social network social network while traveling aboard the Air Force One to the OTan summit in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Last May, Trump wrote in this same social network that anyone who bought Iranian oil would be subject to sanctions.
“All Iranian oil purchases, or petrochemicals, should stop, now! Any country or person who buys any amount of oil or petrochemicals from Iran will immediately be subjected to secondary sanctions,” he said at the time.
During the tensions experienced in recent days, the United States has asked China to be in direct contact with Iran to prevent the country from closing the Ormuz Strait, as requested by the Iranian Parliament, as this could have significantly increased oil prices.
China is the main buyer of Iranian oil, whose barrels represent about 14% of what is purchased by the world’s largest importer from Commodity.
A report from last year’s US Energy Information Management pointed out that about 80% to 90% of Iran’s oil was destined for China.
