Trump reiterates 5% of GDP at NATO and calls Spain “problem”

by Marcelo Moreira

United States President Donald Trump reiterated his appeal for NATO members to compromise 5% of his defense GDP and warned that “Spain is a problem” within the alliance after the country’s refusal to a new increase in spending.

“There is a problem with Spain. There is always a problem with Spain. Spain is not in agreement. Which is very unfair to the rest,” the representative told journalists aboard the Air Force One, on his way to The Hague to participate in the Octan leaders summit.

Trump had already complained last week that Spain “always paid very little” and “should pay the same as the rest.”

The White House has already insisted that all countries in the bloc, including Spain, should allocate 5% to the defense, after Spanish government president Pedro Sánchez told the coach secretary general, Mark Rutte, his refusal to raise the expense.

The American delegation will prioritize the block to increase to 5% of its GDP the expense dedicated to defense, considering that the current level of 2% is “ridiculous” and that all members are trained to assume this increase.

“I’m going to NATO where, at worst, it will be a much quieter period than I just passed with Israel and Iran,” Trump wrote on his social truth platform.

The US president said he is “eager to find his good European friends.” “I hope many things will be achieved,” he concluded.
