United States President Donald Trump has accumulated some important victories this week in his foreign policy, which even yielded nominations to the Nobel Peace Prize.
The first of these involves the fragile ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Iran in the Middle East. The weekend’s attack on Tehran’s nuclear facilities was seen as a successful operation of Americans, which allowed the Trump government to quickly centralize both sides of the war in its mediation.
US Vice President Jd Vance described the latest events in the Middle East as a “new doctrine” of American foreign policy focused on three goals: clearly defining national interests, negotiating aggressively to achieve them and use overwhelming, “if necessary.”
Trump repeatedly stated that he will not allow the development of nuclear weapons by Iran. The US president now seeks to continue negotiations directly with the Persian country, which has not yet made it clear if it agrees with the resumption of dialogue, but does not have much room for another choice.
On Tuesday (24), the Israeli government said, through its UN ambassador Danny Danon, that President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize after intermediating the ceasefire. “I think we should thank him for his leadership and the decisions he has made, and consider the United States efforts.”
According to Danon, the agreement won by Washington can open the doors for new Arab countries to integrate Abraham’s agreements (currently signed by the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco), which were brokered by Trump in their first term so that Arab countries signal with Israel and establish diplomatic relations.
All countries that are part of Abraham’s agreements kept their position even at the height of the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Trump’s victory at NATO: European countries will invest more in defense
On Wednesday (25), Trump was victorious at another point of his external agenda, involving this time to NATO.
All member countries, with the exception of Spain, pledged to invest 5% of their GDP in defense by 2035, something that was required from the president to continue supporting the military alliance amid the growing Russian threat in Europe.
According to the document, there will be two main categories of defense investment: at least 3.5% should be allocated to finance the group’s military capacity and 1.5% can be intended for secondary priority, such as the strengthening of cyber defenses.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that the United States has long taken on much of the Atlantic Alliance burden, but that this situation “changes from now on,” with the new commitment to defense spending.
“For a long time, an ally, the United States, endured much of this burden, and that changes today. President Trump, dear Donald, have made this change possible,” Rutte said, addressing the US President in his speech to NATO’s 32 leaders at the opening of the Aliança Summit in The Hague on Wednesday.
Conflict mediation in Asia among countries with nuclear weapons
President Trump was also praised for mediation in another recent conflict in Asia, involving India and Pakistan, two neighboring nuclear -weapons.
Over the weekend, the Pakistani government announced its intention to formally nominate the White House leader to the Nobel Peace Prize for its intervention to end the crisis with India.
“In a moment of intense regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic and exceptional political ability through solid diplomatic interaction with Islamabad and New Delhi, who reduced the escalation of a rapidly deteriorated situation, finally achieving a ceasefire,” the text says. The announcement was made after a recent meeting in Washington between Pakistan army chief Marshal Asim Munir and the US president.
At the moment, the White House is still focused on the mediation of the war between Hamas and Israel which, according to Trump, must be influenced by the ceasefire on Iranian soil.
