The system, called Cortina Digitalit was developed by the Japanese company AGC and works through a film inserted between two laminate glass panels. With the activation of an electric current, the glass can alternate between three levels of transparency (transparent, semi -transparent and opaque) providing greater privacy and block of up to 99% of UV rays.
Although this technology has already been used on solar cars of luxury car since the 2000s, as in Ferrari and Mercedes models, this is the first time it has been applied to door glass.
At Century SUV, the system is present only in the rear side windows, while the sunroof remains with conventional glass and electric curtain. The news is now available for orders on the vehicle’s 2026 model in Japan.
Produced with strict inspections and aimed at a highly demanding audience, Century SUV costs about $ 182,000. In addition to technological innovations, Toyota plans new versions of the model, including one with minivan style sliding door and a sports edition of Gazoo Racing, already used by the company’s president, Akio Toyoda.
Originally restricted to the Japanese market, the SUV also began to be sold in China and can reach other countries soon.
