The Senate should vote, on Wednesday (25), the bill that increases the number of federal deputies from 513 to 531, from the next legislature. The proposal has already been approved by the House of Representatives in early May., But to start the senators’ approval.
The increase in the number of federal deputies was voted from a decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which determined the update of the distribution of vacancies in the House, based on the 2022 demographic census. The deadline given by the STF wins on June 30. Vacancies need to respect the size of each state and this number has not been updated since 1993.
From the text approved in the House, no state will lose deputy, and nine of them will win between one and four chairs. This week, the congress will be emptied due to the festivities of St. John, but the Senate marked the remote session for parliamentarians to participate at a distance.
If the congress does not take advantage of the new rules until that date, it will be up to the Superior Electoral Court to redistribute the chairs. The House estimates an impact of almost 65 million reais per year with the creation of 18 new vacancies of federal deputies.
