The state of São Paulo faces its first major winter wave of 2025. Since the beginning of the season, last Friday, the 20th, thermometers have been recording significant falls. The forecast for the coming days indicates that the state may face the most intense cold of the last nine years, with expected minimums of up to 4 ° C in some regions.
According to Climatempo, the phenomenon is caused by the arrival of an extratropical cyclone from Uruguay. Cold air advances in a continental way, is dry and favors a sharp drop in temperature, with the possibility of frost in several areas. The capital of São Paulo dawned 14 ° C on Tuesday, and the expectation is that the thermometers will mark 9 ° C at night, which the meteorologists call the “inverted maximum”.
On the morning of Wednesday, 25, thermometers can reach 4 ° C in various parts of the capital and the interior. In neighborhoods in the north of São Paulo, this minimum is already expected, while areas of the South Zone, such as Marsilac and Capela do Socorro, can register temperatures close to 0 ° C. The Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) has already decreed a warning state and predicts frost mainly in the farther regions of the center.
The minimum temperature record in the capital by 2025 so far has been 8.8 ° C, registered on May 30. The last time the city faced marks near 4 ° C was in July 2021, when 4.3 ° C were recorded. If the forecast is confirmed, it will be the most severe cold since June 13, 2016, when the Mirante de Santana station registered 3.5 ° C. The Civil Defense opened an emergency shelter at Pedro II Station of the subway to welcome homeless people.
