Exercise Green Eel tests the latest tactics in anti-submarine war in Norway’s challenging waters
For two weeks, British Merlin MK2 helicopters from the Royal Navy participated in a complex underwater intelligence match against Norwegian and German submarines in the Norwegian fjords. The mission was part of the international exercise Green Eelwhere naval forces from the UK, Norway and Germany participated.

The helicopters flew from RNA’s Culdrose in Cornwall to the spectacular Norwegian base Haakonsvern Helicopter, which is at the top of a cliff overlooking the fjord near Bergen. The operation included two helicopter crews- one from 824 and 814 Naval Air Squadrons respectively- supported by more than 80 Air and Earth crew.
The main purpose was aggressive to locate and track operational submarines in a complex underwater environment. The goals of the exercise were the Norwegian submarine HNoMS Utvaer and the German submarine U34.

The Norwegian frigate HNoMS Thor Heyerdahlother Norwegian naval vessels and the German support ship FGS Main Also participated in the exercise.
It was the second time that Pilots from Culdrose participated in Green Eel. Captain Lieutenant Steve Hayton, helicopter instructor from 824 Naval Air Squadron, emphasized the meaning of the operation: “The team was happy to return to the fjords, where the challenging conditions provide an excellent opportunity to hone our anti-submarine skills.”
