In an interview with Fox News on Sunday (29), US President Donald Trump said Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, if he wins the mayor elections of New York, will need to “behave” and “do the right thing” to ensure the transfer of federal resources to the city.
“Whoever the mayor of New York will have to behave, or the federal government will take heavy financially,” Trump said during the interview.
The statement comes after Mamdani, who presents herself as a socialist and defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary Democrat, emerging as a favorite to command New York. According to Trump, his government does not intend to release funds for administrations that adopt policies contrary to federal guidelines.
“If he does the right thing, okay. But if he does not, they will not receive any money,” said the president, reinforcing his position of confrontation with left -aligned leaders.
Trump had already adopted a similar stance against other states governed by democrats with more radical discourses. A recent example was the threat of cutting funds to California, due to the measures implemented by Governor Gavin Newsom about the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
During the interview, the president again classified Mamdani as a “communist.” Mamdani, however, has rejected the definition and, in an interview with NBC News He said he is already having to get used to the fact that the “president will comment on how I look, how I say, where I come from, who I am.”
