Netanyahu rises in the polls after war with Iran

by Marcelo Moreira

The popularity of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Likud Party increased after the war with Iran, according to a survey released on Wednesday night (25) by Israeli public broadcaster Kan, although more than half of respondents believe that the premie should leave politics as soon as conflicts in the region are over.

The survey was conducted on June 25, one day after the entry into force of the Tehran ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump.

The research shows that Likud would win 31 chairs in the Israeli Parliament if the elections were conducted today, well above 23 of the broadcaster’s last survey, conducted before the war, which makes it the country’s strongest party at the moment (although with a chair less than its current status).

The second largest party would be Israel Betenu, led by nationalist politician Avigdor Liberman, who would win 15 chairs, two less than in the previous survey (currently holds six chairs at Knesset, the Israeli Parliament), while centrist Yesh Atid, directed by former Prime Minister Yair Lapid, rose from 12 to 14 chairs (the party currently holds 23 seats).

Other opposition parties, such as the social democrat Democrats and the nationalist national unit, would conquer 11 and 13 chairs, respectively, both losing two chairs in Parliament compared to previous research.

Jewish power, led by nationalist right minister Itamar Ben Gvir, would remain with seven chairs. Religious Zionism, led by the nationalist directorist Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, would not guarantee enough votes to guarantee a single seat.

In total, Kan estimates that the current ruling coalition would achieve 56 chairs, compared to 53 in previous research.

The governing coalition currently holds 67 of the 120 chairs of Parliament, therefore, if early elections were called, the current government would be at risk, according to the survey.

Despite the improvement in Netanyahu’s voting intentions, 52% of respondents support or strongly support their departure from political life after the end of the war in the Gaza Strip, compared to 24% that remain neutral and 24% another who oppose their resignation.

The Kan broadcaster survey also evaluated the fear of the Israelis compared to Iran after the conflict, which ended on Tuesday, and indicated that 52% of those consulted said Temer the Islamic Republic.

Regarding the success of the operation, when asked if “do you think Israel and the United States significantly damaged Iran’s nuclear abilities?”, 48% answered “yes” while 30% said no.

On the other hand, 40% of the population believes that ceasefire with Iran will not last, compared to 30% that believe in this possibility, while 26% say they do not know.

In addition, 45% believe it was correct to end the war while 40% disagree.

In this context, 62% also support the direct end of the war in Gaza, compared to 22% that defend their continuity.
