Although he has excited radical advocates of economic and expression freedoms – the so -called libertarians – the founding of a political party in the United States with these flags, ventilated earlier this month by Elon Musk, lost strength after the truce between him and President Donald Trump.
While national leaders sprout linked to libertarianism or radical liberalism, Argentine President Javier Milei remains the only openly libertarian ruler in history. And after collecting victories in less than two years of government, it grows as the greatest inspiration of the movement.
Billionaire Musk published June 5 on his social network X a poll about the chance to create subtitles to attract 80% of Americans, those who do not identify with extreme ideas of the dominant Democratic and Republican parties. In a short time, 5.6 million, 82% of the total, voted “yes”.
Musk considered the auspicious result and even launched the provisional name of America Party. The initiative went viral on digital platforms, generating memes and comments. Billionaire Mark Cuban publicly supported the central group proposal for the “80% in the middle”.
Elon Musk’s “80%Party” was in danger of becoming expressionless subtitles
The “Musk Party” was drawn at the height of the fight with Trump, which began after the critic of the entrepreneur to the Republican fiscal plan, which called “disgusting abomination.” Trump reacted with equal intensity, threatening to end government partnerships with companies of the former principal counselor.
The movement promised to divide electoral support and donations into conservative groups, still dominated by Trump, as well as promoting an ideas from the defense of solutions based on reducing state interference, technology and freedom for individuals to express themselves and undertake.
For Márcio Coimbra, director of the Monitor of Democracy Institute, if he was taken later the musk party project with libertarian airs, he would have previously faced major legal and logistics obstacles to consolidate as a viable option, as the US electoral system induces bipartisans.
“Just remember that the US already has a libertarian party (known as LP), founded in 1971, but without expression,” he says. “Libertarians want to build a America where individuals can follow dreams in a peaceful and honest way, without government interference,” evokes the LP statute.
The rest of the world arise candidate politicians to be the “next Milei”
Professor Daniel Afonso Silva, an external relations expert at USP, evaluates that he was missing to enthusiasts of the new American Pragmatic Vision of Shock between Trump and Musk. “One hypothesis is that the billionaire made it difficult to access the president of key entrepreneurs for his project,” he says.
Silva sees another possibility for the breakup, that of growing perception that the best form of Musk assist the White House would be outside of it. “An alternative right party in the US would not rival the government. On the contrary, it would only reinforce its conservative nature,” he explains.
Meanwhile, they arise incipiently around the world, libertarian politicians candidates for “next Milei”. One of these is Chilean Deputy Johannes Kaiser, leader and founder in 2024 of the National Libertarian Party, defender of the minimum state, economic liberalism and conservative values.
Another name pointed out as libertarian celebrity is Dutchman Geert Wilders, leader of the Freedom Party (PVV). Known for the anti-immigration positions and the defense of liberal economic policies, Wilders and his party have stood out in local politics, in support of the right agenda.
Brazil’s only libertarian parliamentarian hopes for the advancement of Chilean colleague
Brazil’s only parliamentarian linked to the world libertarian movement, Deputy Gilson Marques (Novo-SC) followed the news about Musk’s new political plan: “It’s something that should now be analyzed with caution, especially because there were setbacks and excuses to Trump attacks.”
For Marques, the probable scenario is that “80%party” will only become a passing idea: “the oldest party system, the oldest, has been dominated by two parties for almost 200 years. If Musk found a party, he would join hundreds of other independent and historically low expression”.
The deputy adds another factor contrary to the party dream of South African Musk. “Because he was not born on American soil, he is legally prevented from running for the presidency, making his project even more uncertain to achieve competitiveness in majority elections,” he notes.
About the future of Chilean Kaiser, Gilson Marques emphasizes the difference in the context that led Milei to power. “For years, he had wide exposure in the media, always with emphasis on economic topics. Then came the collapse of Argentina, with the president assuming with the annual inflation of 200%,” he says.
The deputy also recalls that Milei’s main opponents in the election were Patrícia Bullrich, linked to former President Macri, who failed to tame the mission to tame the fiscal and inflationary crisis, and Sergio Massa, the then Minister of Economy, who promised to remedy problems created by his own government.
In any case, Marques expects the libertarian party to advance the Chilean elections in November: “Even without the factors that boosted Milei, Kaiser has the example of neighboring Argentina, whose agenda of liberal reforms reversed the economic tragedy and replaced the growth route.”
Milei overthrows inflation, attracts external investments and inspires leaders from other countries
In May, Argentina’s monthly inflation plummeted to 1.5 %, the lowest since 2020 – a science celebrated by Milei and supporters around the world. The rate below the projections has reinforced international confidence in the Argentine state austerity program, spending cuts and exchange rate fluctuation.
Milei administration has already managed to reduce the portion of extreme poverty in the Argentine population from 18% to 8%, taking 4.6 million from this condition. This good time can help the president in the October legislative elections, with estimates that 2025 inflation closes by 28.6%.
Elected on November 19, 2023, with 56% of the votes in the second round, beating the peronist Massa (44%), Milei had the largest electoral victory in the country since 1985, when the redemocratization phase began. The libertarian won on 20 of the 23 provinces, including Buenos Aires and the federal capital.
Fan of Milei, Musk was presented by the Argentine with a chainsaw
On February 20, in the US, during CPAC, the world’s leading political meeting, Milei presented Musk with a chainsaw, recorded with the slogan “¡Viva La Libertad, carajo!” – as a symbol of war against bureaucracy, also defended by the billionaire in the Trump administration.
Milei’s gift aimed to encourage Musk’s work in the Government Efficiency Department (Doge), implemented by the richest man in the world in the current Trump management and generated an estimated economy of $ 175 billion to US public coffers. The tool evokes the cuts of spending.
