Shiow Deng, a veteran police officer who worked for the Los Angeles Police Station for about 30 years, passed away early Monday (23rd) while investigating the Route 405 accident.

The 53-year-old police officer was married and was turned on the emergency lights near the scene of the accident when he was rear-ended by a car passing from behind.

“He was taken to UCLA Medical Center where he was treated very hard, but it was not saved,” said Police Chief Jim McDonnell.

“He died as a hero. He kept people’s safety ahead of himself. His appearance encourages us all,” Chief McDonnell said of his sadness.

The driver of the van, which a veteran police officer tried to help, also died in the accident. Another person is injured and taken to the hospital.

Siou Deng is known as a “exceptional person” and “true leader” and has served the community with “pride, courage and compassion” for over 26 years.

He was promoted to Sergeant two years ago and was in the emotional assessment department for 17 years.

Mayor Karen Bass said, “Today is a sad day for our city,” and ordered the flags of public facilities in the city to be half-mast.
