Shiou Deng, a Los Angeles police veteran with nearly 30 years of service, died at dawn on Monday (23rd) while investigating an accident on the 405 motorway.
The 53 -year -old police officer was married and was on the scene when he was hit by a car from behind.
Police chief Jim McDonnell said: “He was transported to the UCLA Medical Center, and although he had made heroic efforts, he did not survive.”
“He died as a hero. He was there to help others and put their safety over his own. There is an inspiration for all of us while continuing our mission,” McDonnell said.
The truck driver who was stopped by the veteran has also died in the accident. Another person was taken to hospital for his injuries.
Shiou Deng has been described as an “exceptional man” and “true leader”, who for over 26 years served his community with “honesty, courage and compassion.”
He was promoted to a captain two years ago and spent 17 years at the emotional assessment unit.
“This is a sad day for our city,” said Mayor Karen Bass, who instructed the flags of the city offices to be dropped to a half -price.
