Japan executed the so-called “Twitter killer” on Friday (27). Takahiro Shiraishi was a man convicted of justice, who killed nine people after contacting them through the social network.
Shiraishi, 34, strangled and quartered eight women and a man in 2017 in his apartment in the city of Zama, near Tokyo. The victims were between 15 and 26 years old. The remains were hidden in refrigerators. The Justice Minister, who authorized the death penalty for hanging, said he made the decision after careful analysis, taking into account the reason for the convict for crimes that caused great shock and discomfort to the population.
This was the first execution performed in the country in almost three years. Japan and the United States are the only two G7 countries that still apply the death penalty. The support of the Japanese population to this punishment is high, about 83%. In December 2023, there were 107 people in the death corridor in Japan, according to the Ministry of Justice.
