The House of Representatives approved on the night of Wednesday (25) the overthrow of the decree of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that increased the tax rate on Financial Operations (IOF). The decision was made with a significant majority: 383 parliamentarians voted in favor of the proposal against 98 that manifested themselves in the opposite manner. With this, the text now follows for appreciation in the Federal Senate.
It is expected that senators also vote on the story today. Senate President David Alcolumbre signaled earlier that if the House confirmed the overthrow of the decree, he would immediately place the text. Congress moves to end discussions on the subject before the parliamentary recess, scheduled for the coming days.
The proposal to increase the IOF, presented by the Federal Government, aimed to expand the collection to meet the fiscal goals provided for 2025. However, it found strong resistance among parliamentarians. Several meetings were held between Congress and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad in an attempt to build a consensus text. Still, dissatisfaction prevailed, and the vote was taken directly to the plenary, after the approval of the urgency of the agenda.
The announcement of the vote, made of surprise the night before by the mayor, Hugo Motta, took the government off guard. Behind the scenes, the possibility of judicialization of the subject is already commented, with the Planalto Palace evaluating the Supreme Court (STF). Meanwhile, Congress maintains rapid pace of voting, even in São João week, with other controversial guidelines under discussion, such as the possible increase in the number of chairs of the House of Representatives itself.
