From August 1, gasoline sold in Brazil will have a composition with 30% anhydrous ethanol, instead of the current 27%. In the case of diesel, the percentage of biodiesel rises from 14% to 15%. The decision was approved on Wednesday (25) by the National Council of Energy Policy (CNPE) and aims to expand the use of renewable sources and reduce the import of fossil fuels.
Currently, about 5% of gasoline and 20% of diesel consumed in the country are imported. With the new proportions, the Ministry of Mines and Energy provides not only to eliminate this external dependence, but also the generation of surplus. It is estimated that Brazil will export up to 700 million liters of gasoline per year.
The measure must also have a direct impact on the consumer’s pocket. According to government calculations, the price of gasoline in the pumps can fall up to $ 0.20 per liter.
The change in mixtures had been debated since the beginning of the year. Tests carried out by the Mauá Institute of Technology, with automakers and representatives of the automotive sector, confirmed that the new percentages are compatible with vehicles in circulation, without the need for adjustments in the engines.
In addition to the change in fuels, the government has announced measures to curb fraud in the sector. A permanent monitoring room was created with members of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Federal Police, Ministry of Justice, Cade and National Consumer Secretariat, focusing on inspections and preventive actions.
