Global peace index, Brazil behind Cuba and near Venezuela

by Marcelo Moreira

Worse than Cuba and a little better than Venezuela, Brazil is among countries with worst performance in the Global Peace Index 2025 According to the Survey of the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), based in Australia, Brazil occupies 130th between 163 countries – a 27 -position drop compared to 2015 when it was 103rd place. Cuba appears in 102nd place, and Venezuela, in 139th. The worst performance in Latin America is from Colombia, which is in 140th place.

The index evaluates 23 indicators, divided into three pillars: level of social security, internal and external conflicts, and degree of militarization. Together, the data cover territories that represent 99.7% of the world’s population.

Although Brazil went up a position compared to 2024 – when it was in 131st – the long -term trend is continuous fall. The most critical performance of the country is in the management of security and social protection programs, in which it occupies the 149th place.

Regarding conflicts, Brazil was worse in 2025 compared to the previous year. On the other hand, there was a slight improvement in safety and social protection indicators and the level of militarization.

Cuba also suffered a drop in his performance. The country fell from 98th place in 2024 to 102nd position in 2025. Nevertheless, it has more favorable indicators than Brazil in terms of security and social protection.

Venezuela, in turn, is experiencing a prolonged crisis, marked by a fragile peace. Even though it has climbed three positions compared to 2024, from 142 to 139th place, the improvement does not represent real advancement, but an aggravation of the situation in other countries.

The number of deaths from internal conflicts has increased, and the country is still plunged into humanitarian crisis, aggravated by successive years of hyperinflation and the authoritarian regime. The exodus of millions of refugees places Venezuela among the most populated countries in the world.

Although South America was the only region to improve the index by 2025, the scenario remains fragile. Worldwide, peace has been constantly declining since 2014, and the distance between the most peaceful and the most violent countries continues to increase. Factors such as economic stagnation, increased public debt and political instability feed social and geopolitical tensions, raising the risk of new conflicts.
