Brazilian Marcus Arduini Monzo was sentenced on Friday (27) to life imprisonment in London for murdering with a 14-year-old samurai sword Daniel Anjorin and trying to kill three other people during an attack in 2024 that shocked the United Kingdom.
In ordering the sentence, Old Bailey’s Criminal Court judge detailed that the accused must comply with a minimum of 40 years in prison before the possibility of parole, although these years are reduced to 38 by discounting the pre -trial detention.
According to the country’s sentencing council, a person sentenced to life imprisonment will have the penalty of imprisonment revised after the minimum time determined by the judge. If the review decides for release, the defendant will remain on parole for the rest of his life.
During the trial, it was revealed that Monzo, a 37-year-old former businessman, had killed and cheated on his cat before armed the streets of the Hainault neighborhood in the northeast of the British capital on April 30, 2024.
According to the prosecution, he ran over with his van a passerby, Donato Iwule, and then chased and attacked Daniel in the back, causing fatal injuries to his neck and chest.
He then seriously injured a police officer, broke into the house of a Colombian family that slept with his young daughter and injured a police inspector before being dominated.
“For 20 minutes, public members were attacked, police were seriously injured, a couple was terrified in their own home and a talented young man was murdered,” the judge said when he spent the sentence. “You, Marcus, did all this,” he added.
The magistrate pointed out that Daniel was “an intelligent, happy and musically gifted boy,” whose death “devastated” his family.
He also stated that Monzo’s behavior was a consequence of “prolonged and intentional marijuana consumption,” although he himself knew that it caused him paranoia and panic attacks.
“His decision to consume marijuana for months was the dominant cause of his state that day,” said the judge, who pointed out that his “good previous character” was limited as attenuating by the repeated use of illicit drugs.
During the process, it was known that Monzo had accessed misogynistic and extremist content on the internet and, after his arrest, compared his behavior with the movie “Hunger Games”, and claiming that he had a double personality of “professional killer.”
The court declared him to blame for Daniel’s murder for three attempts at murder, a intentional crime of intentional bodily injury, invasion of violence and possession of white weapons, including Samurai sword.
According to Reuters agency, Monzo said he did not remember to have carried out the attacks and his lawyers argued that he should not be considered guilty because he suffered from marijuana -induced psychosis.
