Several countries in the Middle East, especially those of the Persian Gulf, condemned on Monday (23) the launch of Iranian missiles against the American Air Base of Al Udeid, on the outskirts of Doha, the capital of Qatar, a retaliation action that was described as “unacceptable” and “cannot be justified under any circumstances.”
In a statement, the Saudi Arabia Foreign Ministry tackled the “aggression” of “unacceptable” and said that the attack was “a flagrant violation of international law and the principles of good neighborhood” and “cannot be justified under any circumstances”.
Saudi Arabia “affirms its solidarity and full support to Qatar’s sister state and is employing all its resources to support it in all its actions,” the note added.
Bahrain, which announced the closure of its airspace after the attack, also expressed solidarity by gaturing “in these delicate circumstances in the region” and offered his efforts to “avoid climbing and resolve all disputes by peaceful means”, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Oman, who has been an important mediator in nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States, also expressed support for Qatar and “to the measures being taken to preserve their safety and stability”, while requested the “immediate cessation” of all military operations in the region.
In turn, the United Arab Emirates considered the attack “a blatant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and airspace and a clear misdemeanor of international law and the United Nations Charter,” while expressing their “categorical rejection of any attack that threatens the security of the state of Qatar.”
The country has called for the “immediate” end of the climb and warned that the continuation of these hostilities will impair regional security and drag the Middle East “for dangerous paths with disastrous consequences for international peace and security.”
In the same line, Egypt expressed its “deep concern for the rapid and dangerous climb in the region” and confirmed its rejection to any form of military escalation or violation of state sovereignty, asking for a ceasefire.
In a statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the “appeal to the moderation and adoption of diplomatic solutions and dialogue to preserve safety and stability in the region”.
In addition, Kuwait, which also temporarily closed its airspace after the Iranian attack, condemned the act and confirmed the support for Qatar in its “right to respond directly proportionate to the magnitude of this blatant aggression.”
Lebanon President Joseph Aoun also classified the attack as a “violation of Qatar’s sovereignty” and warned that this act threatens to spread violence elsewhere.
“This will have a negative impact on current efforts to reduce tension and return to the negotiating table, which in itself can find adequate solutions to restore calm and stability in the region,” Aoun said, noting that Qatar has been mediator in several regional conflicts in recent years.
Iran’s revolutionary guard confirmed on Monday that it launched a missile attack against the American Air Base of Al Udeid in Qatar in retaliation for the bombing of three nuclear facilities in the Islamic country on Sunday (22).
Al udeid, the largest US base in the Middle East, houses about 10,000 military personnel and serves as an advanced headquarters of the US Central Command (Centcom).
