Amorim defends the freezing of military relations with Israel

Presidency special advisor to international affairs, Celso Amorim, in an interview with the Amado Mundo channel last Friday (27), defended the freezing of military relations with Israel, and criticizes the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO).

“I think what we really have to freeze are military relations [entre Brasil e Israel]”He said, adding that” we have nothing to win “with the partnership.

Amorim, however, said it was not in favor of a breakdown of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Israel, stating that it does not see this possibility at the present time.

“It may one day come to it, but I never defended. First because there are many Brazilians in Israel, who has to have protection from the Brazilian embassy. According to the Palestine, especially in the West Bank, or even in Gaza – that we help to evacuate a large number of Brazilians – it is necessary to cooperate with Israel.”

The Lula government recently paralyzed the purchase negotiations of 36 Israeli obuses by the Brazilian Army, in a measure that, according to experts heard by Gazeta do Povo previously, can disrupt the institution’s modernization plans.
