The overthrow of the federal jurisprudence of the ROE vs. case. Wade turns three on Tuesday (24), but the number of miscarriages in the United States is increasing due to telemedicine, a report released on Monday (23).
According to information from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), a #wecount document, a data project sponsored by the Family Planning Society, a pro-abortion organization, showed that more than 1.14 million miscarriages in the United States in 2024 occurred with about 1.06 million in 2023.
The report pointed out that one in four US miscarriages was made with abortive drugs prescribed by telemedicine in 2024, and by 2022 this proportion had been only 7%.
According to #WECOUNT, half of the abortions by telemedicine last year were made by women who lived in US states where the procedure is more restricted using drugs prescribed by doctors working in states such as New York and Massachusetts, who have less strict laws on the issue and protect professionals who help violate other states.
In June 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States toppled the federal jurisprudence of the ROE vs. case. WADE, from 1973, which prevented states from banning abortion until fetal viability. Now each state defines how to prefer its laws on the procedure, which made states governed by republicans implement or reactivate more restrictive rules.
However, the issue of abortive drugs prescribed by telemedicine remains indefinite in US courts.
Last year, the United States Supreme Court unanimously rejected a request to restrict access to the mifepristone abortive pill, stating that a group of pro-life doctors who had submitted the action in US courts had no legal legitimacy to contest the regulations of the Federal Administration and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prescription of the pill.
However, a process that aims to restrict the prescription of the drug by telemedicine continues to be processed in the Federal Court of Texas.
