6 out of 10 students are delinquent with Fies

by Marcelo Moreira

Six out of ten students who have hired FIES are in default, according to data from the National Education Development Fund (FNDE). The program, which acts as a loan to pay tuition of private colleges, accumulates high non -payment rates.

On average, each debtor student has a debt of approximately $ 46,000. Part of the resources used by FIES comes directly from the budget of the Ministry of Education, that is, they are funded with public money from taxes paid by the entire population.

When a student cannot pay off, the bill is on the National Treasury, affecting all Brazilians. The data lights a warning about the sustainability of the program and reinforces the discussion about the need for review in student funding policies in the country.
